A well-lit yard is enjoyable to look at from inside the house and makes it look better overall. Consider lighting specimen plantings, pergolas, pathways, patios and decks when you plan your outdoor lighting. Low-voltage lighting is easy to install yourself since it comes in kits that can be added to later on as you continue to develop your outdoor living spaces.
Pools and waterfalls are major items, but if you have a smaller space or budget, you can still add water. A small re-circulating fountain (this could even be a DIY project) can be placed in the middle of an outdoor room or in one corner.
Include furniture in your courtyard garden to provide a comfy place to enjoy the atmosphere. Because a courtyard lacks a ceiling, it often seems larger than it is, which can easily lead you to choose furnishings that overpower the space. Some courtyards are large enough to hold a dining table and chairs; others can fit only a bistro set. The smallest courtyards may work best with just a bench.
If you have a deck made of plastic or composite materials, the deck can still benefit from a thorough cleaning at least once a year. Composite decks can still harbor mold and mildew because the material is made of wood fibers and plastic. A gentle power washing will help clean it up, but resist using a strong setting on the machine, as you'll likely cause the wood fibers to pill.
