A water feature belongs in every courtyard garden—just be sure to choose one scale to the space. A fountain that’s too large and noisy can easily overpower conversation in a small space, while a small wall fountain doesn’t take up square footage and has a gentle trickling sound.
Low-voltage lighting that saves energy and softly lights up your yard is still the best way to enhance your outdoor living spaces. Strategically placed lights that shine into the branches of trees gives them a sculptural quality. Soft but effective light splashing on the pathways leading to your pool, on steps and near your patio will allow you to safely maneuver around your yard without tripping over things such as planter boxes, shrubs and furniture.
Every courtyard garden has a sense of enclosure. Four walls may actually be present, or they may be implied by a hedge or section of lattice blanketed with vines. Some courtyard walls have windows cut into them to frame neighboring views—and to give the space a feeling of openness. This is especially important in very small courtyards.
Maintaining your wood deck may also require repairing or replacing loose or broken boards that can make your deck unsafe to walk on. Surface boards as well as joists can rot, so inspect the deck at least once a year for signs of rot. Even a pressure-treated or preserved-wood deck can suffer loose screws or boards. It's best to hire a professional to replace any boards that are twisting, lifting or rotted.
