Don’t forget one of the best reasons to spend time outside: flowers and plants. Add a big planter or two for your patio, where you can display seasonal planters and add color and dimension to an entertaining area.
Pools and waterfalls are major items, but if you have a smaller space or budget, you can still add water. A small re-circulating fountain (this could even be a DIY project) can be placed in the middle of an outdoor room or in one corner.
A patio is often built adjacent to an in-ground pool to offer a place for entertaining and relaxing. They can be made of poured concrete, precast concrete pavers or natural stone such as Pennsylvania bluestone or limestone. The materials that you use for a patio should coordinate with the other hardscape materials you use around your house so that there is a cohesive style or look.
Lighting is also important when you want to create an inviting courtyard that takes on a magical feel after dark. Twinkling light strings in trees, along walls or on trellises make every evening a festive occasion. Candles enhance intimacy, and paper lanterns invite a party. Choose lights that support your courtyard garden’s theme. Illuminate key features, like a fountain, and always light walkways for safety.
