If space permits, plant trees in containers to give your courtyard garden a vertical element. Trees need large pots unless you plan to prune roots on a regular basis. If your courtyard is small, you might need to rely on vines trained on tall trellises and walls to add vertical movement to your garden.
Pools and waterfalls are major items, but if you have a smaller space or budget, you can still add water. A small re-circulating fountain (this could even be a DIY project) can be placed in the middle of an outdoor room or in one corner.
Don’t forget one of the best reasons to spend time outside: flowers and plants. Add a big planter or two for your patio, where you can display seasonal planters and add color and dimension to an entertaining area.
To replace rotted or broken boards, remove the screws and use the damaged board as a template to cut a new board of the same material. Once you remove the rotted board, check the joists underneath to be sure they are free of rot.
