When you are laying out an outdoor room, protect your back with a hedge, wall, flower bed or tree, and face out to give yourself a view.
If you use your pool predominantly in the summer, then you'll want a lot of summer color from flowering plants, but you should know what you are planting.
Container plantings work well around a pool. Pots filled with tropical plants can give you a tropical feel, but consider the maintenance they'll require. You have to be committed to watering every day and if you go away for a weekend then you’ll have to have someone water them.
Every courtyard garden has a sense of enclosure. Four walls may actually be present, or they may be implied by a hedge or section of lattice blanketed with vines. Some courtyard walls have windows cut into them to frame neighboring views—and to give the space a feeling of openness. This is especially important in very small courtyards.
